November Meeting
Board members in attendence: Debbie Diersch, Leslie MacDonald, Faith Zack, Anne Howard. Other members: Helen Dilworth, Nancy Caldwell Elections: Debbie and Faith have one year remaining, leaving 5 board seats to be re-elected. Helen pointed out that it would be best not to have so many board member terms expire at once, so we voted to stagger them for this election only.

So, we nominated candidates for either 2 or 3 year terms. Leslie MacDonald and Anne Howard were nominated for re-election to 2 year terms. Helen Dilworth and Jodi Jones were nominated for 3 year terms. [After the meeting, Tamara Meier was nominated for a 3 year term by email]. The election will be held at the January meeting.

By-laws: An additional amendment was made to add two additional sections to Article 5 of the by-laws related to Voting as follows:
Sec 2. Chapter business shall be decided by a simple majority of the director’s present Sec 3. A quorum of at least 4 directors must be represented for a vote on chapter business to be taken The amended chapter by-laws were unanimously approved by the members present.

Amateur Clinic: CDS now determines the policy for selecting an Amateur for the Amateur Clinic. We will draw three names at random at the January meeting.
Holiday Party: Helen volunteered her place. Party will be held Dec 16 at 4pm and will include a barn tour, tree decorating, gift grab, and potluck. Debbie asked that members also bring something for the chapter basket, which we will assemble at the January meeting.
Sporthorse Factory Tour: In lieu of a horse health forum, Helen will host a fun day snuggling with her foals, along with some talks on breeding, sport horse confirmation. Details to follow.
Show business: We are applying for another 2 day 3 star show in July. Will not attempt to put class list in Omnibus, just “call for premiums” so exact classes and fees and be determined later. We need to book judges and stabling early for best choice.
Next Meeting: January 10 at Faith’s will include board elections and creating the chapter basket to send to the CDS meeting.

ELECTIONS
At the November meeting, the by-laws amendments sent in the last issue were
approved by a majority of members in attendence with the following additions to
Article 5 of the by-laws related to Voting:
Sec 2. Chapter business shall be decided by a simple majority of the director’s
present
Sec 3. A quorum of at least 4 directors must be represented for a vote on chapter
business to be taken
Five candidates were nominated for the board of directors. Because we want to
stagger the expiration of terms, we nominated some candidates to a shorter 2 year
term and some to the full 3 year term.
The vote for these members will take place at the January meeting. The candidates
are:
Two year terms:
 Leslie MacDonald, Anne Howard
Three year terms:
Helen Dilworth, Jodi Jones, Tamara Meier
According to the by-laws the various officers will be selected from among the
newly elected board members at the January meeting.
No proxy votes will be allowed - only members in good standing who are in
attendance will be allowed to vote. Why Horses?
On the first day of creation, God created the Horse.
On the second day, God created Man to serve the Horse.
On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth to spook the Horse when
Man was upon his back.
On the fourth day, God created an honest day's work so that man could labor to pay
for the keeping of the Horse.
On the fifth day, God created the grasses in the field so that Horse could eat and
man could toil and cleanup after the Horse.
On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the Horse healthy and Man
broke.
On the seventh day, God rested and said "This is good. This will teach Man
humility, it will tire him out and keep him striving ever forward to meet the
needs of the Horse."
Amateur Clinic
Lilo Fore is the clinician for next year’s Amateur Clinic. Our chapter will be
sponsoring one junior or amateur rider’s clinic fees (but not transportation,
hotel or stabling). The rider will be selected at random at the January meeting -
you must submit your name in writing or email to a board member or be present at
the meeting. You can also contact the clinic organizers directly if you wish to
sign up for any remaining openings.

A Word A Day
prad (prad) noun Horse.[By metathesis from Dutch paard, horse.] "`Just send somebody out to relieve my mate, will you, young man?' said   the officer; `he's in the gig, a-minding the prad. Have you got a coach 'us here, that you could put it up in, for five or ten minutes?'"
Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist, 1838.

Promotion Where Art Thou....
Since lameness prevented my training level horse from making it to the CDS Championships on October 11-14 in Rancho Murieta, I went without him and participated as a volunteer, prize donor and part of a group who sponsored a ringside table.  Two good friends came out to Murieta from San Jose to join us for the Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening performances. It was wonderful to see how many nice horses we now have in California, and it's encouraging to see increasing numbers of riders and horses striving for the higher levels of dressage.  It was discouraging, however, to witness the lack of spectators at the Complex.  One of the friends who joined us is an avid horsewoman who owns two horses and rides regularly in the San Jose area, although she is not a dressage student per se.  She had no idea the Championships were even taking place, much less where or when.  Had I not personally contacted her, she would
have missed the event, which she enjoyed a great deal.  On the other hand, she and myself are both quite aware of the Grand National Rodeo taking place at the SF Cow Palace beginning October 26. There are posters everywhere, including at least one of the Santa Cruz area "dressage" barns. So, say we "take it to the streets" and we all tell two friends about our major events, and they do take us up on our invitations and attend.  To make their trip worthwhile, and encourage them to come again, an organized, cohesive program could
be presented.  One which which had "added features" which could greatly add to the crowd appeal and entertainment value.  For instance, again referring back to the Grand National Rodeo, at that upcoming event they are interspersing the standard bronc riding and calf roping with different events each evening, including Grand Prix show jumping, a medals class, a Percheron hitch, a liberty class, etc.
Furthermore, the rodeo events are being held in the evening - running roughly 8pm to 11pm.  The evening programs at the Championships this year were brief, especially on Saturday evening, which we were hoping would be a "big" night.  It was very difficult to ascertain in advance whether both nights would have an equally full program, or whether it would be best to attend for entertainment
value on Friday or Saturday. We need to add some theatrics and excitement, once we have started to attract more specators through better advertising and promotion. Both of these objectives are neither complicated nor difficult to achieve, with comprehensive marketing and a good stage manager!
Beyond offering spectators (and bored husbands!) a more exciting evening program at our shows, we also need to think about making the show itself more interesting for the participants and sponsors.  We live in or near some of the most productive wine country in the nation, and many small vintners welcome the opportunity to expose new potential customers to their products. Why not have a wine tasting as
part of a spectator and sponsor appreciation party?  A silent auction?  Make more of our shows charity benefits, and have the charity help with the promotion?
One person I spoke with at the show wondered if perhaps the dressage crowd really does prefer to maintain a "closed society".  I have to wonder if this is perhaps the unfortunate case.  If it is not, then there are some clear steps which can be taken to make at least the evening performance portion of our shows more known and better attended. Finally, rather than just point out the obvious shortcomings, which is always terribly easy to do from the armchair quarterback position, I invite anyone reading this to please educate me about whether or not CDS and USDF have a formal promotions and marketing committee, person, group or agency. If not, then why
not?  What would it take to create such a thing?  If such a subpart of CDS and/or USDF do not yet exist, what would it take to create a marketing and promotions section?  Again, I'd welcome knowledge from anyone, as I'm still pretty new to CDS and dressage in California.  Thank you, and I will now be stepping down from my soapbox du jour.  You can e-mail me at: tmeier@ridingarts.com

Natural Horsemanship with Ray Berta
Have you ever felt your horse totally surrender to you? His attention with you.
His body and mind soft and flexible, yet alert, patiently waiting for your
direction? You feel like you have access to every part of him and he knows.  He
responds with willingness and clarity, putting smooth effort into each
movement.  There is no drag, tightness, or resistance.  You and your horse are
one.
This is a way of life for Ray Berta and his horses.  He is a master horseman who
knows how to work with riders at all levels to help them discover and nurture
this precious harmony with their horses.
Ray will be giving a clinic August 11, and Santa Cruz CDS members can audit for
free to watch Ray work.  The clinic will continue on August 12, auditing is $15
for all.  Call Jodi Jones (831) 722-9042.

Erica Poseley Lunging Clinic
Ever wonder why so many riders in Europe progress to the higher levels of
dressage? It’s because they are trained methodically and systematically until
their seat and position are absolutely perfect.
The step most American riders have missed - training on the lunge - is taught in
the European style by Erica Poseley. Drawing from her experience at the
Reitinstitut von Neindorff in Germany, Erica can break down in detail what the
rider needs to master a classical seat.
Learn where your legs seat and upper body need to be, and feel how to sit
properly so you can rely on your seat, not your hands.
This mounted lunging clinic will be held on June 30 from 9am to 4pm, at
Renaissance Ranch. The cost to ride is $45 to chapter members, $50 to others for
a 45 minute ride. Each rider must supply a horse that is safe and quiet, and
accepts being lunged in side reins. Auditing is free to Santa Cruz CDS  members,
$15 for others.  Please bring your own lunch.
To register, contact Faith Zack (831) 425-0491

From the Chair
It’s that time of the year again and we are all gearing up for the activities of
the upcoming season.  From a chapter point of view we are in full show planning
mode.  This year our annual fund raising chapter show is a two-day, three-star
event being held at American Sporthorse on July 21st and 22nd.  It is a
sanctioned AHSA/USDF/CDS show and we expect it to be a sold out event.  Which
means we should be able to raise some good funds for the chapter.  It is also a
fantastic opportunity for our chapter members to participate in a fully
sanctioned show right in our local area!  It doesn’t get much better than that!
On the other side of the coin, it’s a great opportunity to support our chapter
by helping with the show.  Whether or not you have any previous experience, we
can use your help!  We have lots of positions available for before the show as
well as during the show and even just a few hours can help tremendously.  So
please take a look at the positions posted in this newsletter and give me a call
at 408-353-1324 or email me at Debbie@chrysalis.net if you see anything that you
would like to help with.

This is a fun way to learn what it takes to put on a show as well as to work
with other chapter members and it’s fulfilling to know that you contributed to
the success of a major event that helps our chapter fund local events.  Don’t be
shy! give me a call!

One further note about the show:  in this newsletter you will find a form for
Program Advertising.  Srina Spurr has graciously volunteered to be our
Advertising Manager for the show this year and will coordinate all show
advertising.  However, she could use all of our help to go out there and round
up as many advertisers as we can get.  We would like to be able to give prize
money as awards at the show and we will only be able to do that if we gather
enough sponsors.  If each of us just went out and got one sponsor (even if we
did a sponsorship ourselves) it would contribute greatly to this effort.  I hope
you can help with this effort.  Thank you!
- Debbie Diersch

CDRA
The Classical Dressage Riders Association is a new organization dedicated to
supporting dressage education.  CDRA has developed and offers dressage
instructors a testing and awards program that they can administer at their own
facility that is designed to motivate and encourage their student riders'
pursuit of the classical principles of training.
The CDRA program can be used to prepare riders for competition or to motivate
students not currently competing to work their way up the training ladder.

Coastal Classic Show - July 21,22

Premiums for the Coastal Classic are in the mail, get your entries in early, as
we expect the show to fill.  We will have a second judge, Creeky Routson, for
some classes at the show, so you can get two learned opinions for one price, and
practice with a judge at E, just like at the Annual Show.  The two judge
combination also counts as a single unique judge for those trying to get
qualifying scores.

We have arranged for on-site stabling at American Sporthorse! We will have 40
temporary stalls for horses or to be used as tack rooms.  Trailer parking and
day use trailers will be up at the other end of the pastures, so you may want to
reserve a stall to be closer to the action.

We have sponsorship opportunities for your business to advertise in our show
program.  Make copies of the enclosed sponsorship form and take them to your
employer, barn manager, or potential patrons of the equestrian arts.
Debbie Diersch, our show manager, still needs the following half-day volunteer
positions: Scribes, Runners, Scorers, Announcers, Ring Stewards and Parking
Attendant. We’re looking for a Stabling Manager and a Food Coordinator (a great
opportunity for a barn or caterer to run the food concessions). We also need
volunteers to set-up before the show and take-down/clean-up after the show. Call
Debbie if you are interested in helping in any way. (408) 353-1324

Sport Horse Breed Seminar
The California Dressage Society is sponsoring  USDF Dressage Sport Horse Breed
Seminar on July 14 and 15 at Keenridge in Moorpark, CA.  This program is
designed to educate breeders, riders, trainers, judges and potential sport horse
owners about the qualities desired in a sport horse, and how to rate these
qualities. The instructor is Hilda Gurney and the program includes conformation
evaluation, development stages of growing horses, rules, award systems, practice
judging, showing/judging on the triangle and under saddle.  Contact Peggy Klump
(909) 483-0997 for more information.

run in CDS newsletters. We will mail premium to our chapter, adjoining chapters,
maybe mailing lists from other shows.
Anne will create a budget for the show.
Insurance (Note: I don't have any details on this, who is ensuring we are
insured)?
Kitti will contact caterer from Coastal Classic, to see if they want to offer
food for sale.
Will we advertise prize money?  If we put it in the premium, we are committed to
that level. Might be safer not to mention specific prizes. Jodi, Anne, and
Debbie will approach businesses to see if they want to sponsor classes (State
Line, Tack in the Box, Anstadt Daz, etc).

Spring Show Report

Saturday started out beautiful, sunny, and warm, but it turned windy and overcast by the first ride at one o’clock. Good weather for riders, but a bit frazzling for some of the horses. However, considering it had rained all day the Sunday before, we all felt pretty fortunate. We had mostly Training and First Level rides, and one rider at Second Level. The final treat of the day was an entertaining Quadrille Compulsory test.

The Show High Point Award, a white show pad with show name embroidered around a CDS logo was awarded to Helen Scanlon, and her mare Pikalo, who received a 70% at Training Level. It was their first show together, and Helen was thrilled! Congratulations to all the riders!

FROM THE CHAIR

How nice it was to see all the new faces at our last chapter meeting!  I hope everyone enjoyed it and will keep coming back.
I want to extend a big "THANK YOU" to everyone who volunteered at our Spring Chapter show.  The entire show ran extremely smoothly thanks to the volunteers and the exhibitors.

Special thanks go to:
Anne Howard who as the show secretary accepted the entries and scheduled all of the rides.  Anne also announced during the show and helped with set-up and clean-up.
Leslie MacDonald who was the main scorer and helped with set-up and clean-up.
Faith Zack and Shannon Bane who scored and helped with set-up and clean-up.
Michelle Dohl who helped announce during the show.
Sharon Lundergsmith and Kevin Sheehan who did check-in and helped set-up and clean-up.
Also thank you to American Sporthorse for the use of their facility for the show and getting the grounds ready for the show and to Pam Nelson - our judge whom everyone felt did a wonderful job.
And special thanks to our exhibitors!  We saw many nice horses and riders and everyone gave their all. Special mention goes to Helen Scanlon riding Pikalo who had the high point ride of the show and won a beautiful "High Point" show dressage pad.
We are already in the planning stages for next year's show and are talking about making it a three star show meaning it would be AHSA, USDF, CDS sanctioned.  If you would like to be involved in that show either as a volunteer or exhibitor then please come to the next meeting to share your thoughts and ideas or to just hear what we are discussing.

By the way, our next meeting will be at Helen's Trilogy Farm so you are in for a treat!  She has a beautiful home and stable and best of all -we'll get to see her new crop of foals!  Hope to see you there!

Physical Therapy for Horse & Rider
July 13 - 14, American Sporthorse
American Sporthorse is holding a clinic with Martha McClaren July 13 and 14. Martha is a Physical Therapist with tremendous skills (Anne Howard's mentor) and is working on both horses and riders. She evaluates the riders position and asks them to change to a more correct mode. She can see the restrictions that keep a rider from accessing that correct way of moving her body and opens up the potential for her to be able to make the necessary corrections. She has just started to expand her work to horses with exceptional results. This clinic she will also be working on some horses and riders together. For more information call Anne (831) 688-4748

Meeting MINUTES
Santa Cruz Chapter CDS Meeting Minutes May 23, 2000 at 7:30 pm Board Members in attendance: Jodi Jones (who made delicious chocolate covered strawberries), Anne Howard, Faith Zack, Michelle Dohl, Kitty Craycroft, Debbie Diersch.
Also attending: Srina Spurr, Mike Pineo, Jennifer Hubbard, Helen Scanlon, Diane Wiekowitz, Bonnie Terribilini
Show Business:
The May 6 spring show was held May 6 and judged by Pam Nelson. Debbie Diersch, the show manager, reported that a small profit was made. We did not get as many entries as we had hoped. Discussion about whether a different show date (Spring show is early in season for many, also very close to DG Bar time), or having USDF designation would improve
attendance. Anne will investigate the possibility of moving the show to two days around the second week of July and getting USDF recognition for next year. The show could be a replacement for the Coastal Classic, and feature freestyles and quadrilles, but will not offer additional stabling.

Longing Clinic
Longing/long-lining clinic with J. Ashton Moore is confirmed for August 19. Jodi and Faith will co-chair the event. Debbie will create flyer to promote at area feed stores and stables. Anne will submit a 1/4 page ad to the CDS Dressage Letters and our website, and Faith will send information to other chapters to include in their newsletters. Since it is primarily an educational event for the chapter, there will be no auditing fee for Santa Cruz Chapter Members. Other auditors will pay $10. Participants can either be longed on a horse ($30/half hour) or bring a horse to be trained ($60/hour). Requests for participation will
be accepted on a first-come basis. Jodi still needs to confirm the format of the clinic with Jeff. Food and longe-horse arrangements need to be made.

Volunteer Motivation Part II:
Anne read her notes from the USDF Convention session on Motivating Volunteers by Dr. Laurie Perry Johnson. One good point was that in addition to publishing an Agenda and Minutes for meetings, we should also assign follow-up responsibilities and action items.

Scholarships for Junior Championships
The board will determine which Juniors will receive scholarships to offset some expenses for the Northern California Junior Championship show. To be considered, Juniors must submit a letter to Debbie Diersch by July 15, or bring it to the next board meeting on July 18.

Agenda for next meeting:
 Finalize Long lining/Longing clinic
 Junior Scholarships
 Fall Activities
 Next Year’s Show Plans
 Any New Business

Future Meetings:
July 18 Helen Dilworth’s
September 12 Faith Zack’s

Horse Heaven Recommendation
What an appropriate name for this novel! It is horses, horses, horses from cover to cover and almost every page is a delight! It is about race horses and the racing industry to be exact. Now I know that's not our thing, but if you love horses and if you like to read, then you will love this book. Jane Smiley, the author, has a conversational writing style that is easy to read. She weaves stories of several horses, their trainers, owners, handlers, and breeders into this delightful book. If you are the least bit into metaphysics or open to some new-fangled ideas then you will find some of the discussions that go on very interesting
and thought provoking (you may even try having a few telepathy sessions with your own horse). I liked this book so much I had a hard time putting it down until I was finished with it. I've got a hard copy if anyone wants to borrow it from me. Just email me at debbie@chrysalis.net.

Barnyard Gossip

Liz Ditz was at the June Murietta show and got some nice scores and won a class with her Hanoverian Denali (sometimes known as Tamale!) Sandy Howard also took Euro Pro Iko to Murietta and cleaned up in the second level freestyle classes as well as winning 2nd-4.

Naomi Kirschenbaum, who lost her beloved Wittiger this winter, has bought a new fellow named Ricochet. He comes originally from Con Brio Farms as does Sandy's black horse Hacedero. It seems they probably grew
up together and are related on the dams side. Ricochet is out of the daughter of Hacedero's mother. Cousins I think.

Deb Slaney, who also lost her mare Samara this spring, has purchased a new 3 year old Ideal colt named Isaac. He is chestnut and quite mature and sensible for a baby. He is by the same sire as Euro Pro Iko.

Dane Carsen is the new owner of a 4th level horse that will hopefully take him to the Young Rider Championships. This horse is also by Ideal.

Emily Sorenson has purchased a young horse. He is currently living in Hollister but should be coming to ASH before school starts. He is a warm-blood Andalusian cross who seems to have a very loving disposition. She hopes that she can bring this horse to the Young Rider level.
